2013 Commercial Producer of the Year

Russell Trefny

Local rancher Russell Trefny, son of Charles T. and Donna Trefny, was recognized by the International Brangus Breeders Association (IBBA) as the Commercial Producer of the Year for his progressive use of Brangus genetics and successful commercial cattle operation.

The award was established to annually recognize a commercial breeder who effectively utilizes Brangus genetics to make their operation more profitable and successful. Trefny Ranch, located near Weimar, Texas, was recognized for more than 20 years of contributions to the Brangus breed as well as the beef cattle industry.

“When I nominated Russell for Commercial Breeder of the Year, it was an easy pick,” said Don Cox, IBBA awards committee member and past director. “I have watched Russell for over 25 years breed some of the best cattle in Colorado County. He and his family are some of the most respected cattlemen and farmers around. His using Brangus bulls improved his herd and put a high demand on his females.”

A fifth generation cattleman, Trefny found Brangus to be the best breed for his crossbreeding operation in Central Texas in order to maintain a consistent product that resulted in higher quality carcass grades at the harvesting stage, making it more profitable for him to retain ownership through the feedlot. The IBBA also recognized Trefny’s effective use of expected progeny differences (EPDs) as a selection tool to form the foundation of his cowherd.

Trefney, along with his wife Michaelanne and daughter Jessye, were presented the award Friday, March 7, 2014, by the IBBA at its annual awards banquet in Houston, Texas, in conjunction with activities at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
